| Oil on canvas W: 630mm x H: 1810mm W: 25" x H: 71" This work is unframed & slightly damaged. In this painting I am depicting how one's creative path has been blocked by Apartheid. Art deals essentially with 'truth'. Apartheid and Art are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Here we see the white wall, guillotine-like, in line with the 'artists' head, is shutting out the future. The symbols that are waiting in the foreground (background) are in fact the 'power tools' the artist still has to 'realise'. For these are the tools - his allies - that are going to enable him to survive. I do not support the argument that this creative act (painting this painting) denies the essence of what I have just stated. My personal artistic history proves and vindicates my stance. |
